Question:
Last month you wrote about being laid off and getting unemployment. Are there any areas where one is likely to find work? I?m now one of those who was laid off.

Answer:
Dear Jon,
The Bureau of Labor Statistics continually releases information about industries that are hiring. So does Manpower, Forbes and AARP. Use the links at the end of this column to supplement the information here and to help launch your own search.
Regarding AARP: even if you are under age 50, do not overlook this excellent source. Any industry or company that AARP says is hiring is hiring people of all ages, not just those “of a certain age.”
Manpower’s most recent employment outlook found that 15% of the employers surveyed were hiring.
According to the Forbes’ survey, four sectors that are hiring are: transportation, utilities, federal government and leisure/hospitality. Transportation and utilities are not terribly surprising, in that consumers need oil, gas, coal and electricity as well as trains and buses, even in a recession. And, the stimulus package is creating jobs for highway, road and bridge specialists.
On the other hand, leisure and hospitality is rather unexpected because Americans are not traveling as much as in the past. However, the survey points out that many Americans are still eating out but at inexpensive restaurants, such as McDonald’s, Chili’s, Olive Garden and inexpensive locally-owned and run coffee shops and bistros.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported that six sectors have added new jobs since the recession began. Health care is the leader, followed by public schools and universities, private schools and universities, local government, federal government, mining and utilities.
Most surveys indicate that every nurse who wants to work can find a job. And that many other positions are available at hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices. Veterinarians and helpers are also in demand.
Good luck!
