A More Palatable Approach To Investing in Rocky Markets
Charles B. Carlson, CFA
Contributing Editor, Dow Theory Forecasts

Everyone always says that you should "buy low and sell high." The problem is that "buying low" is tough to do. Indeed, when stocks decline, the last thing you want to do is buy stocks. You get nervous. You become increasingly cautious. In short, you put off buying because you believe that there may be a better time to buy down the road. Of course, what usually happens is that you never "buy low" and end up chasing the stock after it rebounds.

The key, therefore, is to develop an investment strategy that makes it easy to buy during rocky market periods. One of the big benefits of investing via "dollar-based" vehicles such as BUYandHOLD is that these vehicles have reduced the barriers to invest during tough markets.

For example, which is easier to do during declining markets - invest $500 or $5000? Obviously, it is tougher to pull the trigger if you are going to sink a large amount of money in the market as opposed to a small amount of money. Unfortunately, in years past it was very difficult, if not impossible, to invest small amounts of money via brokers. That has all changed with the advent of BUYandHOLD and other dollar-based investment programs. Now it has never been easier to invest small amounts of money to buy quality stocks.

The upshot is that you now have no excuse for not doing what you know you should -- investing during bear markets. Indeed, BUYandHOLD and other dollar-based investment vehicles have made buying during tough markets remarkably easy and palatable for any investor.
