What Happened To "Bad" October?
Charles B. Carlson, CFA
Contributing Editor, Dow Theory Forecasts
What happened to the market "bogey man" that usually beats up stocks in October?
Indeed, while much is usually made about the dangerous month of October of stocks, nary a word was heard this year.
Why? Simple. The market liked October this year. Liked it a lot.
In fact, October was the salve that healed the market wounds created in September.
Look at the numbers. The Dow Industrials rose nearly 3% for the month. The Nasdaq composite had an even better month, rising a healthy 13% during October.
What is to be learned from all of this? That market myths are just that - myths. Don't buy into the seasonal stuff that you read about the market.
October can be a good month for the market.
As can the other eleven months.
