American International Group, Inc., a Delaware corporation, is a holding company. The Company, through its subsidiaries, is engaged in a range of insurance and insurance-related activities in the United States and abroad. Its activities include both General Insurance and Life Insurance & Retirement Services operations. Other significant activities include Financial Services and Asset Management. The Company's General Insurance subsidiaries write substantially all lines of commercial property and casualty insurance and various personal lines both domestically and abroad. Its principal General Insurance operations are: Commercial Insurance writes substantially all classes of business insurance in the U.S. and Canada; Transatlantic Holdings, Inc. subsidiaries offer reinsurance on both a treaty and facultative basis to insurers in the U.S. and abroad; Personal Lines operations provide automobile insurance through 21st.com and the Agency Auto Division, as well as a range of coverages for high net worth individuals through the AIG Private Client Group.; Mortgage Guaranty operations provide residential mortgage guaranty insurance that covers the first loss for credit defaults on high loan-to-value conventional first- and second-lien mortgages for the purchase or refinance of one to four family residences; Foreign General Insurance group accepts risks mainly underwritten through a network of branches and foreign based insurance subsidiaries. The Company's Life Insurance & Retirement Services subsidiaries offer a range of insurance and retirement savings products both domestically and abroad. Insurance-oriented products consist of individual and group life, payout annuities, endowment and accident and health policies. The Company's main Foreign Life Insurance & Retirement Services operations are American Life Insurance Company, American International Assurance Company, Limited, together with American International Assurance Company (Bermuda) Limited, Nan Shan Life Insurance Company, Ltd., The Philippine American Life and General Insurance Company, AIG Edison Life Insurance Company and AIG Star Life Insurance Co. Ltd. Its Domestic Life Insurance and Domestic Retirement Services operations are American General Life Insurance Company, The United States Life Insurance Company in the City of New York, American General Life and Accident Insurance Company, AIG Annuity Insurance Company, The Variable Annuity Life Insurance Company and AIG Retirement Services, Inc. The Company's Financial Services subsidiaries engage in activities including aircraft leasing, capital markets, consumer finance and insurance premium finance. Its Consumer Finance operations in North America are conducted through American General Finance, Inc. The Company's foreign consumer finance operations are conducted through AIG Consumer Finance Group, Inc. (AIGCFG). AIGCFG has operations in Argentina, China, Brazil, Hong Kong, Mexico, the Philippines, Poland, Taiwan, Thailand, India and Colombia. The Company's Asset Management operations comprise a variety of investment-related services and investment products. Its Other operations include interest expense, restructuring costs, expenses of corporate staff not attributable to specific business segments, expenses related to efforts to improve internal controls, corporate initiatives, certain compensation plan expenses and the settlement costs. AIG's businesses operate in highly competitive environments, both domestically and overseas. Principal sources of competition are insurance companies, banks, investment banks and other non-bank financial institutions. The Company's operations around the world are subject to regulation by many different types of regulatory authorities, including insurance, securities, investment advisory, banking and thrift regulators in the United States and abroad.
