Ford Motor Company was incorporated in Delaware in 1919. It is a producer of cars and trucks. The Company and its subsidiaries also engage in other businesses, including financing vehicles. The Company's business is divided into two sectors: Automotive and Financial Services. The Automotive and Financial Services segments disclose seven segments: Ford North America; Ford South America; Ford Europe; Volvo; Ford Asia Pacific Africa; Mazda; and Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin. Ford North America segment includes the sale of Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury brand vehicles and related service parts in North America (the United States, Canada and Mexico). Ford South America segment includes the sale of Ford-brand vehicles and related service parts in South America. Ford Europe segment includes the sale of Ford-brand vehicles and related service parts in Europe including all parts of Turkey and Russia. The Volvo segment includes the sale of Volvo-brand vehicles and related service parts throughout the world including in North America, South America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Africa. Ford Asia Pacific Africa segment includes the sale of Ford-brand vehicles and related service parts in the Asia Pacific region and South Africa. The Mazda segment includes the equity income/loss associated with the Company's investment in Mazda as well as certain of its Mazda-related investments. The Other Automotive component of the Automotive sector consists of centrally-managed net interest expense and related fair market value adjustments. The Financial Services sector includes the segments: Ford Credit; and Other Financial Services. Ford Credit provides vehicle-related financing, leasing, and insurance. Other Financial Services includes a variety of businesses including holding companies, real estate, and the financing and leasing of some Volvo vehicles in Europe. The Company owns or holds licenses to use numerous patents, copyrights and trademarks on a global basis. It purchases a variety of raw materials from numerous suppliers around the world for use in production of its vehicles. These materials include non-ferrous metals, precious metals, ferrous metals, energy and resins. The Company's competitors in the United States include General Motors Corporation, Chrysler LLC, Toyota Motor Corporation, Honda Motor Company and Nissan Motor Company. Many governmental standards and regulations relating to safety, fuel economy, emissions control, noise control, vehicle recycling, substances of concern, vehicle damage, and theft prevention are applicable to new motor vehicles, engines, and equipment manufactured for sale in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. In addition, manufacturing and other automotive assembly facilities in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere are subject to stringent standards regulating air emissions, water discharges, and the handling and disposal of hazardous substances.
