Question: I?m still worried about how safe my bank account is, especially since the ?FDIC Bank Watch List? has been mentioned in the news. How can I find out if my bank is on this list?

A BuyandHolder

Answer:

Dear BuyandHolder,

It probably won’t come as a surprise to learn that the FDIC does not reveal the names of troubled banks to the public. (I mean, why should we know anything important about where we keep our money?)

However, there’s is a bit of good news and that is that the FDIC Library, probably due to pressure from the public, has compiled a list of private companies that evaluate and rate banks. You’ll find it at: www.fdic.gov/bank/individual/bank/index.html. The list provides the name of each company, a general overview of who it is and details about how to get the research information the company offers.

Caution: The FDIC is careful to point out that this list is “not FDIC-endorsed.”

You should also read our two previous columns on the topic: “Insured Bank Accounts” and “Increased FDIC Insurance.

Good luck!
